I'm dead - again. For the 15th time since this all started.
I blink.
"Where am I?"
I always ask the same question when I come to the white place that I am in.
"Did you find her?" the voice that seems to come from everywhere and nowhere asks.
Looking around, I try to find the source of the voice, but I never can.
"No. Can you give me a clue?"
The voice doesn't answer. I feel myself slipping downwards, like being sucked down a sink hole, begin. Frantically I grab at anything I can, but, of course, I have no hands and there isn't anything to grab.
"Where can I find her?" I scream. "Tell me at least that."
The slipping stops.
"The market. Look there, Carl Robinson."
Everything goes black. I get the very real sensation that this might be my last chance.
MORNING - AGAIN
My eyes open sharply. I roll out of bed, flip on my clothes so fast that I nearly break the zipper on my pants and rush out the door.
"The market," I murmur.
I went there once looking for the woman that I'm supposed to find, but didn't notice one. Now that the voice has given me my - most likely final clue - I need to get to her quickly. I don't know what it is that is supposed to happen, but I MUST meet her today. There will be no more chances and I don't want to think about what might happen if I don't achieve the mission that I have been set.
Running down the road, I turn several corners. The whole town is so familiar now that I am almost a local.
The market is in the middle. I hustle through the crowds of milling tourists, desperately eyeing every single woman, young or old, for any kind of indication that she might be the one that I am looking for.
Two hours later I have nothing. Not a single woman stuck out as being the one that I'm looking for.
"Fruit, sir?"
I look down from where I am standing in a quieter part of the market where fewer people are milling about. There is a small girl with an apple in her hand. It's extended to me. For a second I wonder if she is the one, but I realize that is silly. The voice said a 'woman' not a 'child'.
"No thank you."
Turning, I don't see the little girl's grin. She hammers the apple into my groin. I note that it is quite hard for an apple and is actually a painted stone replica.
"Ouch..."
I hit the ground side on. She frisks me so professionally that I don't even notice her stealing my valuables.
"Thanks, mister. Have a nice day," she cheerfully calls as she runs away.
Groaning, I drag myself to my feet. It's not the lost possessions (personal items are pretty meaningless when you die everyday) that gets me there, but the fact that this hasn't happened before. Maybe fate has thrown me a bone. I certainly need it.
My feet perform an ill-timed pattern of steps on the gritty, broken pavement as I try to chase down the little thief. She isn't very fast because of her size and I know every inch of the market quite well by now. The child jumps under the back flap of a stall. I slow and walk around front. The girl is talking to a woman. I pause.
"It's her."
Somehow I know. She stands as tall as me, has gorgeous brown hair, the sooty browned skin of the locals and a slim but curvy body that would give any man pause. The girl is holding my possessions out to the woman, who doesn't look pleased by her facial expression.
"Excuse me," I say.
The little girl looks terrified. I barely see her. She can have everything I own. The shop owner, she is what I'm here for. I know that in my heart right now.
"Yes?"
My fruit selling thief makes a break for it, but is caught by the collar.
"That child stole my stuff just now," I explain. "It's really nice to meet you."
The two comments don't really fit well, but they make perfect sense if one thinks about it. The child did steal my possessions, but that doesn't matter. Meeting the one that is going to save me from whatever it is that I'm caught up in is more important.
"I thought so," the woman says. She turns to scold the child, but I put my hand up.
"It doesn't matter. She can have it. I came here to meet you."
"Me?"
"Yes. I think you are stunning."
Never before have I ever been so direct with someone of the opposite sex, but this time it seems very naturally.
"Ah... Thank you," she says, blushing. "You aren't mad at her?"
"No, not at all."
The two stare. I think my complete lack of concern shocks them. They would understand fully if they had watched that same explosion 15 times and known the secret terror that I always hold on waking up: The fear that I might not see that explosion ever again and sink into the white place forever.
"Then... how can I help you?"
"A date. Now, actually."
She stares in shock.
"Are you serious?"
"Yes. 100%."
The shop keeper shakes her head, clearly worried about what kind of crazy that has come into her shop today.
"I can't. I have to look after the shop."
I shrug.
"Leave it. You have to go out with me today. I don't have a choice."
We stare at each other. Strange as it might seem, I'm totally calm. I've faced real death and the terror of it over and over. Asking a girl out on a date is nothing in comparison.
"You are nuts."
I shrug again.
"Kid, can you look after the shop?" I ask.
Her mouth opens a few times, the child looks up to the woman and back to me.
"Ok."
The shop keeper stares down at her.
"Why? Why me?"
I answer simply.
"You are the most beautiful woman I have ever seen. If I was to die today then there would be no regrets in my life if I could spend the rest of today with you."
"Wow..."
"I know."
I put out a hand.
"Come with me. Let's get some coffee."
The girl nudges the woman. She looks down to her and back to me.
"Alright. Let's go."
She takes my hand. It feels so right that I almost swoon. Never before have I experienced love at first sight, but this must be exactly what it feels like. It's almost like a story, but twice as good because this is real life and she is right at my side.
"What's your name?"
"Sara."
"I'm Carl Robinson. 32 and a lawyer. How do you know that kid?"
"She's my daughter," the woman admits as I guide us towards the best cafe in town.
"Really? You don't look alike."
"Her father is a white man. She's a mix."
"Ah..."
I pause with her.
"Married? Boyfriend?"
She shakes her head.
"I've been single for 4 years now."
I nod. About the same time as me.
"That's good. I'd hate to go on a date with another man's woman."
We continue walking.
"Why do you think I'm so beautiful," she asks after awhile. "I don't understand."
I brush a hand through my hair and smile at the sun for a second.
"Because you have the most amazing face I have ever seen. Love heart shaped, but some how symmetrical in a way that defies shape."
"No one has ever said that to me."
"I'm not no one," I tell her in reply.
We stroll into the cafe. Everything is always the same every day I come back, so I guide Sara to the rear table that I know is available until 10am.
"Relax a bit. I can order. What do you want to drink?"
"Black coffee, two sugars."
Walking to the counter, I put our orders through and come back to sit down, taking her hand at the same time as if it was the most normal thing in the world to do.
"I bought some food for breakfast. I'm quite hungry."
Sara and I sit and ta
lk until our orders come and then talk some more. Her life has been hard. The man she married ran from her and Kim early on after her pregnancy. Because he lives in the US, she couldn't follow him and had to turn all the remaining wealth that she had into the market stall. It worked out, but by no means has it been easy.
I pat her hand and feel sympathy. Dying - often - makes a man much more empathetic. I've learned much in my time coming and going from the white place. One of those things is caring for my fellow human beings. Considering that I'm a criminal attorney by trade, that is a bit of a miracle.
Things wind down towards 12. Both of us look to the clock and wonder where this goes next.
"I have to go back to the stall," she tells me.
I nod my head and get up.
"I'll walk you back. Can we meet after the market closes at six? I want to take you somewhere."
She smiles.
"I'd like that."
Dropping her off, I walk back to the cafe, sit down and watch the same scene I have seen so often in the moments of sadness that followed when I thought that escape was impossible.
"It's possible," I say to myself, not caring what others think. "Completely."
THE BEACH
Sara's smaller body presses into my side as I hold her, watching the surf flowing in. The sun is going down now. I realize that our time with each other is going to be short.
"Can I ask something of you?"
"What?" she murmurs happily from where her head is rested on my shoulder.
"Is it alright if I kiss you? I want to do at least that before the sun goes down."
She makes a happy sound and turns her head up, lips pursed. I gently kiss her and pull her head in. There's tears in my eyes now. I hold back the sobs that threaten to come to avoid disturbing her. Right now I'm both grateful and sad: Grateful that I met her and sad that I lost her today - the last day of my life.
My hand comes to her lap and runs down the exposed area of flesh created by her dress riding up.
"Hmmmm...?" she purrs.
I turn my body and press her side on to the sand. My hand works under her dress and finds her wet.
"Are you sure?" she asks quietly. "We just met."
My eyes met hers. She sees the tears. I smile.
"If this was all I can have of you, I would be glad for it."
Something passes between us. I know she suspects something is wrong with my situation. I kept mentioning that this is my last day. The sun has about 15 minutes before it reaches the point where it kisses the horizon. I don't have time to explain. All I can do is make love to her now and hope that I can carry that feeling on to the next life.
My kisses are frantic at first. We both feel the heat of the moment very keenly. It flows through us and seems to grow like a fire in my chest. I slip a finger inside and find that she is tighter than any woman I have ever experienced. Even the one virgin that I slept with (my first) was not like this.
"It's going to be hard," I whisper. "I promise I'll make up for it if there's time."
She turns and lies on her back, spreading her legs and bringing me into her. Our bodies join at the hips, just as they were designed to do, and I reach down to unzip and shuffle around in my pants to bring myself out.
"I'm sorry if it hurts," I whisper to her between kisses. "I will try to be gentle."
Bringing the tip to the hole, I slowly push inwards. She is wet and tight. I moan loudly to the empty beach that we are on (one that will remain empty until the explosion in 10 minutes or less time). Inside, her body is tensing and contracting. I edge deeply, trying to get myself into her. My manhood is not small and it is difficult for her to take a man like me inside her tight flesh.
"Keep trying," I urge. "Not long."
I finally reaches the base and sigh. The grip of her insides is like a vice crushing my length. It's painful but not unpleasant. This is how a woman should be after years without a man. I'm glad that I could be her first after such a long time. It means a lot to me.
Edging in and out, I take it very slow with her. Sara's body might be made to arouse, but that doesn't mean I shouldn't respect it with every stroke of my member.
"Carl..." she whines in my ear as we make love. Her eyes are locked on mine. They have that little crinkled look that women's get when things are feeling truly good.
"Sara..."
My hands come up and pins hers to the sand. I feel their small size and how they compliment mine. It feels good, comfortable, holding her like this as my hips push forward and back, spreading heaven through both of our bodies.
"I'm going to..." she cries demurely.
I punch in faster and harder and feel her insides sucking hard on my stalk. It makes me cry out too. The feeling is shocking because it makes her much tighter. I can feel every single fold, curve and round of her inner body. It drives me over the edge.
White washes in. She cries out. I grab hold of her and don't let go.
"Incredible," she whispers. "So much came out."
Right about then the world flashes white.
*****
I wake up on the beach, my arms wrapped about something warm. My eyes open like they have every single day since this started, but one thing is different.
"Sara?"
She mumbles something and turns towards me with a smile.
"You fell asleep right after. I couldn't wake you."
I kiss her like I've never kissed a woman in my life. The delectable feeling of being alive, not dead, not repeating the same day over and over, flows through me.
"Are you ok?" she pants when I let her up.
I run my fingers through her gorgeous hair and smile deeply.
"Totally ok."
Rolling to my back, I draw her to my side and hold her there, embracing Sara's warmth as I am embracing the woman.
"I think life is going to be interesting from here," I whisper to the warm sun above.
My eyes turn to hers. We smile like lovers do and kiss. This is the first morning of the best part of my life and it is glorious.
